Until 2019, Lipka swung a bit of a light stick and really did not get on base. However while with the Yankees AAA affiliate, Scraton Wilkes-Barre, he did put up a slash line of .281/.361/.453 across 72 plate appearances. While with the Yankees AA affiliate, Trenton, Lipka dropped down a bunt hit in the ninth inning to break up a no-hitter. Death threats evidently came his way as a result. He did not play in 2020 as he was not picked up by the Dodgers player pool in the COVID-19 shortened season. Since there was no minor league season, he got no reps on a professional baseball field. In 2021, however, he has put up the best numbers of his professional career. Right now he is slashing .333/.393/.505. It is possible the Brewers are looking to capture lightening in a bottle with a late-bloomer. Most likely, Lipka will serve as organizational depth. Nonetheless, David Stearns and Company are always looking to improve the Milwaukee Brewers organization, not just the Brewers team, and they likely see Lipka in that light.Baseball statistics courtesy of Fangraphs

They didn’t pitch well. Like, at all. It was just incredibly bad. The only pitcher not to allow a run was the position player! They barely hit. When they did hit, they couldn’t bring in the runners. It was a very Oriole-like performance all around. And the White Sox did what a first place team is supposed to do to a last place team. Just another ugly night at Camden Yards. Taking the mound for the Orioles was Jorge López, who was just as frustrating as we’ve all come to expect. He struggled a bit in the second inning but came away unscathed. Things got uglier in the third. López only gave up a single run, but needed 32 pitches to get through it. With one out, Tim Anderson came up for the second time in the game and singled. One out later, José Abreu walked, which set up an RBI chance for Brian Goodwin. Goodwin doubled to knock in Anderson Ryan McKenna Jersey. López retired Adam Engel on a nifty play by Kelvin Gutiérrez to end the inning. After a scoreless fourth inning whose worst part was a wild pitch that looked to me like Pedro Severino’s fault (he is not fun to watch behind the plate at all) Curt Blefary Jersey, things really fell apart in the fifth inning. Anderson started the inning for the White Sox, which means that López was about to see batters for the third time. Here is a friendly reminder of what happens to López the third time through the order, from our friend Tyler Young: I mean… pic.twitter.com/YZNGOlNJV5— Tyler Young July 10, 2021 López faced three batters in the fifth inning and didn’t retire a single one. He gave up three straight singles to Anderson, Yoán Moncada, and Abreu. The third single knocked in what was, at the time, the go ahead run for the White Sox. Things could have gotten a lot worse, but Brandon Hyde pulled López for Cole Sulser, who got the next three batters without allowing another run. Well done, Cole! But wait, he screwed it up. Sulser came back for the sixth inning and walked two batters. That was it for him, but Dillon Tate was even worse. Tate was awful. The White Sox gave him an out with a sac bunt and he still couldn’t get anything done. Anderson, who was quite annoying in this game, hit a two RBI double and then Tate walked the next three batters. Three! The last one knocked in a run that made it 5-1, and a sacrifice fly made it 6-1. Finally Tate got the last out and we didn’t have to look at him anymore. Not that it got any better. Tate was followed by César Valdez, who gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh inning. There was something to smile about in that inning, however. Valdez gave up a solo home run to Gavin Sheets. Sheets is a local guy who just happens to be the son of former Oriole Larry Sheets. MASN cameras capture the happy father in the stands several times earlier in the game, and again looking joyful as he celebrated his son’s third career major league home run. The Orioles were gonna lose this game no matter what, so it was a nice moment to see. Joining in the parade of terrible pitchers tonight was newcomer Shaun Anderson. Just claimed off waivers from the Rangers, Anderson fit right in. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two runners allowed, but couldn’t get out of the ninth inning. With two outs and two runners on, Anderson served up a three-run homer to Engel that made the score 12-1. The next batter singled, and that was enough for Brandon Hyde. It was time to see a position player! Pat Valaika, come on down! Or, uh, over. He was already playing second base. Valaika got the third out of the ninth inning without incident. I haven’t mentioned the offense yet and that’s really because there is nothing to mention. The lone Orioles run came in the second inning on a Ramón Urias home run. Other than that the only offense was several wasted opportunities. In the first inning, Trey Mancini doubled and Ryan Mountcastle walked, but they were stranded. In the fourth inning, it looked like Anthony Santander led off with a homer, but on review it was correctly called a double. He was also stranded. Gutiérrez and Cedric Mullins started the fifth with back-to-back singles but Austin Hays grounded into a double play and no runs scored https://www.baltimoregearshop.com/trey-mancini-jersey. Two more runners were stranded in the sixth inning. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The White Sox starter Dallas Keuchel got into trouble quite a bit but the Orioles just couldn’t capitalize. Because they are the Orioles. That’s what they do. Orioles lose, 12-1. Just ugly baseball all around. They’re back in action tomorrow night with Thomas Eshelman on the mound. So, you know, that should go well.
four consecutive years of losing 90+ games, and a seemingly endless amount of time since the Cincinnati Reds ever played a game with any sort of relevance https://www.crfanshop.com/jesse-winker-jersey, it seems somewhat of a fool’s errand to attempt to pen a season review piece about what went right this season. On the whole, of course, things haven’t been right, weren’t right this year, and don’t appear to be - on paper - fixed enough to project much pending right for next year.First, we looked at the things that actually went well for the Reds, of which there were actually a surprisingly decent few.Next up, we examined the aspects of the team that didn’t exactly exceed expectations, but were solid enough parts to at least consider them as OK.Today, we get to the fun stuff. The juicy stuff. The back-breaking, mind-numbing, standings-crushing aspects of the 2018 Reds that were the fuel behind their 67-95 fire and, almost as importantly, behind the malaise many of us currently have with the rebuild’s pace. Gahhh.One-run games - or, rather, losing by one-run all the dang time.Way, way back in the year 2005, when YouTube was still in its infancy, Twitter had yet to exist, and Facebook was still going by “The Facebook,” The Hardball Times was already diving into interesting, provocative pieces about the game of baseball as we knew it - and as we hoped to know it. It was in that year that former HT editor Dave Studeman dove into some of the statistics behind team results in one-run games, noting that regardless of overall team record, teams records’ in one-run games feature a winning % much, much closer to .500 than in any other outcome. That’s a long-winded way of saying that despite the true talent of teams, and despite how good they are overall in a 162 game season, one-run games - at least by win/loss % - are largely a toss-up. That puts this nugget of information from former Red Reporter fearless leader Joel Luckhaupt a bit more into context:Since 1900, worst record in one-run games1935 Braves 7-311937 Browns 10-311999 Royals 11-321916 A's 11-321936 Phillies 12-342018 Reds 10-28— Joel Luckhaupt September 28, 2018Of course, that tweet came on September 28th, and the Reds still found a way to lose another one-run game before the end of the season, meaning they clocked in with a brutal, abysmal 10-29 record in their 39 games decided by a lone run this year. I can’t even...Gahhhhh.The thing is, it’s often cited that the ability to manufacture runs the old way, meaning with steals and bunts and moving runners over, is one reason why teams succeed in tight contests. Well, given Jim Riggleman’s proclivity for bunting, the stolen base prowess of both Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza, and the team’s 19.1% K-rate being only the 19th highest in all of baseball, you’d think that wouldn’t be a problem on the offensive side of the ball in these contests. Pair that with revamped back of the bullpen - also a reasonable surface indicator of teams that win close games - and you’d think, if anything https://www.crfanshop.com/jesse-winker-jersey, one-run games might’ve actually been a place where the Reds excelled.Nope. Gahhhh.Heck, they even hit .254 with men in scoring position, which was the 11th best mark in baseball, ahead of the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers, among many others. For whatever reason, they were abysmal in these type games, the worst in all MLB, and it brutalized their overall record. If they went, say, 20-19 in those games - hell, the San Diego Padres went 22-21 in one-run games - that turns their 67-95 season record into a 77-85 record, and while that still sucks an egg, it’s at least a somewhat shinier egg. This is the part where we mention injuries happen, and are no excuse for losing.OK, this here’s a caveat, and one that I mentioned up top in the intro. The injuries the Reds faced this year were brutal, of course, but those simply cannot be fall-back reasons for the abysmal record in the standings. That said, I’m including them here because they’re a big, big reason behind the end-of-season malaise I think many of us faced, and that’s why I’ll mention it here.Y’see, even in awful years, late August and the month of September at least usually give rebuilding teams a chance to bring up their talented youngsters - the future of the organization - and give the fans a different perspective when they show up at games. Sure, they might lose again, but at least we’ll get to watch those guys who are supposed to dig this team out of the cellar in the future! LET’S GOOOOOOO!Nope. Not so much this year.Jesse Winker’s rookie season was cut short by a freak shoulder jam, meaning the .400+ OBP and emerging power we saw from him that helped catapult the offense into relevance mid-year was long gone by September. Nick Senzel, a consensus Top 5 prospect in the game and presumptive mid-year call-up candidate, found out he’s no Stretch Armstrong when bending his finger twelve awkward ways on a slide, and was done for the season before ever getting a chance to be called up. Even Lucas Sims - the most promising piece of the Adam Duvall trade to Atlanta - had his shoulder flame out before he could ever start a game in September, meaning we’ll go into this offseason without knowing whether he might be one of the few young pitchers who can help this rotation going forward (more on that below Cincinnati Reds T-shirts, of course).Scott Schebler faced multiple DL stints. Eugenio Suarez was shelved early. Michael Lorenzen and David Hernandez missed a month, which preceded the signing of Yovani Gallardo. Gahhhh. Even the indestructible Joey Votto landed on the DL for a time, ending a run of Cincinnati Reds seasons that were admittedly awful but buoyed by his record-breaking talent sending out statistical anomalies in the latter months that made you tune in anyway.Rebuilding seasons are often designed to show the future’s promise while ignoring winning, and while certain young players gave glimpses of that for the Reds in 2018 - here’s looking at you, Jose Peraza - injuries sapped even that from us this year, which was just awful.OK, fine. Here’s the part about the starting pitching.Unlike the last few seasons - here I go, trying to spin optimism into this - the Cincinnati Reds starting pitching wasn’t the absolute worst in all of baseball. Heck, the unit even cobbled together 4.4 positive fWAR in 2018!That said, they still posted a collective 5.02 ERA from their starters, which was good for the 6th worst mark in the game.Their 1.62 HR/9 mark was ‘bested’ by only the abysmal Baltimore Orioles staff, albeit barely (1.72).Their 4.88 FIP ranked as the 4th worst mark across all MLB teams.Gahhhhh.If you dig into the individual numbers, you’ll also see some troubling aspects. 140 MLB pitchers threw at least 100 innings in the 2018 season, and if you sort those 140 by ERA from worst to best, you’ll find several familiar names on that ‘leader’ board. Homer Bailey’s 6.09 ERA ranked as the third worst, somehow. Sal Romano’s 5.31 effort ranked 11th. Tyler Mahle’s 4.98 was 19th, Anthony DeSclafani’s 4.93 was 22nd, and that’s how you end up with a starting rotation that you can barely depend upon to get into the 5th inning of most games, let alone through it. And, if you sort it by FIP just to get a slightly different potential explanation for why those four allowed so many earned runs, you still find each of them ranked among the 21 worst pitchers in that category, which is equally disconcerting.Look, the fact that Robert Stephenson was too bad to even factor into this may or may not be a positive. The same can be said for Brandon Finnegan, in what was another lost year for him. The Matt Harvey experiment was reasonably not awful, but if he leaves in free agency, that just further dents a group that already drove like it’d sat out in a hail storm. They weren’t last, no. They weren’t good, though, for the fifth consecutive season, and we’re reaching the point of the rebuild where one of the key pieces that was acquired to begin the rebuild - Anthony DeSclafani - is already set for his second trip through arbitration this winter. Better, yes, but still with miles to go before being anything other than the weakest link on the team.Gahhhhh.
Until it wasn't, as the Chicago White Sox mounted a huge comeback to beat the Kansas City Royals, 10-7 in 12 innings. On the strength of another solid outing by Jeff Francis, the Royals took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Just three outs, and they would exit their season-opening home stand with a 5-1 record and a lofty perch atop the American League Central https://www.kcrgear.com/carlos-beltran-jersey.Oh, and Joakim Soria, one of the game's best closers, would be attempting to preserve that three-run lead. To nobody's surprise, Soria got two quick outs. One more.Soria would get that third out ... but not until far, far too late.Last season, Soria never gave up four runs in one game. Last season, Soria never gave up three runs in one game. In fact, entering this season Soria had never given up four runs in a single major-league game.He gave up four Wednesday afternoon, though, with the crushing blow delivered by Carlos Quentin, who smashed an 0-2 fastball into left-center field for a two-run double. Soria finally got that third out, but the White Sox led 7-6.Momentum-killer, right? The end of the Royals' recent magic? Hello, reality?Maybe not quite yet.  it would have been scored a first-round knockdown by the Phillies. Jameson Taillon gave up four runs while only recording a single out, and this deficit proved almost too steep to overcome. However, the Yankees were able to get up after a nine-count only to see Aroldis Chapman blow it in extras. Let’s see how it unfolded. The Yankees came out swinging, and went down in order on six pitches in the top of the first. Things couldn’t have been different for Taillon in the bottom half, as he was on the ropes from the first pitch he threw. The Phillies loaded the bases with three straight leadoff singles. Bryce Harper knocked in two with a single up the middle to put the Yankees in a first inning two-run hole. Taillon then reloaded the bases with a walk to Rhys Hoskins, only for Andrew McCutchen to drive in the Phillies’ third run with a sac fly to the warning track. They then added a fourth on an RBI single from Alec Bohm, which knocked Taillon from the game. This was by far the worst we have seen from Taillon this season. He pushed most of the counts to two-strikes, but proved utterly incapable of putting guys away. Phillies hitters had no issue fouling off pitches until Taillon made a mistake, and they made him pay every time. Courtesy of StatcastThat’s 14 two-strike pitches without recording a single out. Yikes. Taillon’s final line: 0.1 innings, five hits, four runs, one walk, no strikeouts https://www.nyygear.com/rougned-odor-jersey, 34 pitches. Nestor Cortes came on in relief and promptly loaded the bases once more on a Ronald Torreyes single. He did escape the inning with strikeouts of Vince Velasquez and Odubel Herrera to limit the deficit to 4-0.Gary Sánchez took a bite out of the Phillies’ lead with his solo home run to deep left-center in the top of the second off Velasquez, as he continued to make his case to regain the permanent starting catcher role. DJ LeMahieu led off the third with a double down the right field line but was left stranded. Nothing much happened until the bottom of the fourth when Herrera doubled to lead off, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jean Segura single to make it 5-2 Phils. The Yankees created some traffic in the fifth with a leadoff Gardner single and pinch-hit walk by Chris Gittens, but Velasquez retired the next three in order. The Phillies tacked on two more in the bottom half, with Luis Cessa looking like the Cessa of old. He walked Hoskins, and then gave up two straight singles and a double to Torreyes before recording a single out in the inning. He settled down the rest of the frame, but not before the Phillies extended their lead to 7-2.Rougned Odor clawed back a consolation run in the sixth with a 428-foot solo shot off the facing of the upper deck in right. Sánchez collected his second RBI of the night with an eighth inning single. The bloop to right field scored Aaron Judge, who led off the inning with a single of his own and advanced to second on a Gio Urshela groundout. Just when all hope seemed lost, the Yankees mounted a ninth-inning rally. Gardner and Tyler Wade each drew one-out walks, bringing LeMahieu to the plate. He drilled a 2-2 Hector Neris splitter into the seats in left center. Torres started on second, but misread an Urshela grounder and failed to advance. Sánchez and a pinch-hitting Higashioka both struck out, and you could feel this one slip away. Indeed, Aroldis Chapman came on in the bottom of the tenth, and sailed a throw to first on a Travis Jankowski sac bunt attempt, allowing Torreyes to go to third.
